Linux alternative to Avid Pro Tools

About

Ardour is a proper DAW: unlimited tracks, real-time plugin processing (LV2/VST3), flexible routing via JACK/PipeWire, and solid MIDI support. It’s what you reach for when Audacity stops being enough — actual mixing sessions, live band recordings, mastering chains. PipeWire on a modern distro makes the low-latency setup far less painful than it used to be.

The workflow assumes you know your way around a DAW; newcomers coming from FL Studio or Ableton will find the loop/session-style workflow missing entirely (Ardour is linear, Pro Tools-style). Official binaries from ardour.org ask for payment, but distro packages and Flathub builds are free. The UI runs through XWayland rather than natively.
