About
ClamAV is the open-source malware scanner, maintained by Cisco Talos, with regularly updated signatures and on-demand scanning via command line or the ClamTk GUI. Its honest use case on a Linux desktop: scanning email attachments, downloads, and shared files so you don’t forward Windows malware to clients, and scanning Windows partitions or drives from the Linux side.
Understand what you’re getting: detection rates trail commercial engines in independent tests, there’s no real-time protection comparable to Windows Defender without significant setup (and questionable value), and Linux desktop malware remains rare enough that most users run no AV at all. Install it for file-scanning peace of mind, not as a security blanket — good update hygiene and Flatpak sandboxing matter more.
