LibreOffice

Linux alternative to Microsoft Office

About

LibreOffice covers the whole suite: Writer, Calc, Impress, plus Draw and Base. For personal documents, invoices, and moderately complex spreadsheets it’s completely solid, and it opens formats Microsoft abandoned years ago. Native .docx/.xlsx support is good enough that most files round-trip cleanly.

The honest caveat is collaboration: if your clients live in Word with tracked changes and heavy formatting, or in Excel with macros, expect layout drift and broken VBA. There’s no real-time co-editing equivalent to Microsoft 365 or Google Docs either. For solo work it’s excellent; for document ping-pong with Office-heavy teams, keep expectations calibrated or use OnlyOffice for better .docx fidelity.
